Cold Spring Harbor State Park Offers Great Views not far From Home

Cold Spring Harbor State Park may come as a surprise for those unfamiliar with the area.

Its steep slopes and verdant woodland are an unexpected sight upon driving through Cold Spring Harbor Village. However, following the main 1.14-mile trail and making one’s way to its furthest heights can be very rewarding.

With its entrance on 95 Harbor Road, Cold Spring Harbor State Park appears to spring upon those passing by. Nestled within the surrounding town, one never quite leaves civilization while  walking through the Greenbelt Trail, but its natural beauty serves as a fine escape from modern life.

The 40-acre park is a popular destination for local residents as well as those from out of town, providing unparalleled views of Cold Spring Harbor in a way most have never experienced. From its highest points, one can see shimmering water and the nearby town in a single picturesque view.

The steep terrain can seem daunting, but the main trail can easily be followed due to the white markers on various trees. The path is also cleared of bramble and plant life, though stones are commonly found embedded on steep inclines.

It’s common to find people walking their pets within the park. The hard-packed dirt trails make it simple to bring along an animal companion. Beginners need not worry about the trail, either. It is fairly short by most hiking standards, with plenty of plateaus following upward slopes.
